I am hooked on beading! I have finally realized that what I enjoy doing most is making jewelry. I sit at my table in my little studio and look at the projects I am currently working on. Then I get out the containers with pieces that need help. They may be short on the number of beads required or the clasp didn’t work or they came apart, (worst of all), or I just didn’t like the finished product. And I make myself fix the problem on at least one. A fixed piece is my redemption.
But then the outrageous amount of beads that I currently have prompts me to use some of them by putting together a finished piece. That is the most satisfying.
In days past I have given preference to reading, knitting, crocheting, doing a crossword puzzle, or a jigsaw puzzle, or playing a game on my computer. (I especially like free cell and solitaire.) But the studio calls me. And despite my prior convictions, I find myself back there, looking at the beads, putting them together to make a necklace, a bracelet, or earrings from the leftovers. And usually I find that I need something to complete them such as a clasp, or a type of bead to fill out the design that the beads call for. And they certainly do that.
So, I am off to the bead shop. There are two nearby. Or I check my Fire Mountain catalog that has everything a jewelry maker can need.
And I am hooked. When in the shop I find a strand of beads that speaks to me. It has a special color, or an unusual design, or it says, “Buy this, it’s not expensive, and you know you’ll love it.” And I do. I come out of the store with more than I intended to buy. I have little will power. I cannot wait to get home and see what I can do with my purchases.
I try to imagine who will see my jewelry. I think that it should appeal to the working woman who needs an accessory to add to her daily wardrobe, or the stay-at-home mother, maybe on a budget, who would like to wear something new and pretty. And a pretty necklace, bracelet, or earrings make a nice gift. However, I do dream about the woman who is out in the world and needs to wear something different and attractive. I like to say that my jewelry is one-of-a-kind. She can say that it is original, handmade, and especially, different.
I hope that this gives you a picture of me and my world as of today.

My latest endeavor is participating in a craft fair organized by some of the residents of the Mobile Home Park where I have lived for 12 years, in Canoga Park, CA. Some of the ladies in the park spend their free time creating beautiful things such as jewelry, clothing, home decor and Christmas items. Our show is coming up next weekend on Nov. 8.
I am in the process of gathering together all the goodies I want to display at my table. I will have many Christmas items such as a handmade ladies vest, several earrings I made, some I bought years ago, and a gorgeous necklace in red, green, & other beads on a silver chain. Picture doesn’t do it justice. It glows with Christmas spirit.
I have been working to identify and price each item and in the process I thought it would be a good idea to inventory what I had and where I kept it. I found 146 necklaces that I had created but hadn’t sold. I have at least 10 more up for sale this month on my Etsy shop. That’s just a portion of what I have made, sold, or given away over the years.
And the earrings, OMG, the earrings! When I have a few pieces that just don’t fit into a necklace or bracelet they become earrings. I have some old beaded Christmas earrings up for sale that I made a long time ago. It may sound strange, but I get pleasure from creating something that someone might enjoy wearing.
If you happen to live in my home town, Canoga Park, or the vicinity of the San Fernando Valley, CA., the show will be at 8811 Canoga Ave., Canoga Park on Nov. 8 from 9-3. You won’t be disappointed at the variety of beautiful creations made by my talented neighbors.
Just in case you can’t make it to the show, you can view my creations at http://mizmlu.etsy.com. Expired items can be renewed if you are interested.
I wore this necklace along with my beaded pumpkin earrings and a green blouse to a meeting of my friends last weekend. We share books we’ve read and like. I got a lot of compliments on both the earrings and my necklace. I made the pumpkin earrings many years ago, only wear them during the Halloween period and they are an attention getter. This peach colored necklace was perfect with them and the green blouse. http:mizmlu.etsy.com
Good question. I make jewelry because it satisfies my creative urges. I would love to draw pictures, but I have no talent for this. I have produced all sorts of needlework such as sewing, knitting, needlepoint, crocheting, making afghans for each of my offspring, even grandkids and babies as they come along. But I don’t do much of any of those things anymore. Cooking doesn’t appeal to me, nor gardening. I don’t have the energy to tend to a yard and I don’t have nuch of a yard where I now live, but I have pots of greenery on the porch. I have to remember to water them.
However, I can excel in making jewelry. I search the various sources for beads that have character, color, design and a different style. I am completely addicted to making necklaces, bracelets and earrings. I haven’t counted but I may have almost 200 jewelry pieces.
I recently disposed of the bed in my guest room and turned it into a studio so I can spread out and not have to clear the table when guests come for dinner. When I wander into my “studio” I am immediately struck by the need to work on the current project. I lose myself in it.
The fact that I have not sold a piece of jewelry in more than 4 months depresses me, but doesn’t deter me from making something new, or finishing a project started a while ago, or, making a trip to the bead shop.

Aquarians love to think and put their ideas out to the world. They also love to think they’re right! They are inventive and original;also sympathetic and compassionate. They love the latest gadgets, gewgaws, computers and next-generation technologies. The great strengths of the Aquarius-born are their vision, intellect and humanity.

This month we are featuring the colors of Capricorn, an earth sign, from Dec. 22- Jan 19
Capricorn has many sides, takes an interest in everything, is mysterious and deep, very strong. As you would expect from Saturn, ruler of Capricorn, its colors represent power that consolidates and sets boundaries. Just as Capricorn is associated with limitations, so, too, do black, dark grey, and brown denote enclosing. Choose carefully these hues. Think of neutral and earthy shades, black, gray, violet, dark brown.
You can find the jewelry associated with the sign of Capricorn in my jewelry shop at www.etsy.com/shop/mizmlu. That takes you to the site where the listings are. Or, to see just your color in jewelry, you can click on “Sections” on the left and then choose the Astrological listings. All my jewelry is handmade, original, and with free shipping in the US. Come take a look. Capricorn has many sides, takes an interest in everything, is mysterious and deep, very strong.
